Snippet

A snippet is a short description of a web page that search engines display on SERPS when a user performs a keyword search.

Webmasters create descriptions for web pages which may or may not be used by search engines when they display the web pages in search results.

Generally, search engines display snippets with keywords from the web page that match the keywords that the user searched for. This practice encourages the user to click on these pages with matching keywords as the assumption is that the content is more relevant.

Search engines like Google also include the date the web page was created and the name of its author if this information is available.
