Link farms are websites where anyone can list their website. The farm gives free backlinks to the listed websites.
There is rarely ever an editorial process established to screen the websites listed in a link farm. It is usually a free-for-all. As such, many SEO practitioners used link farms to increase backlinks to their websites and increase their search engine rankings.
Today, when search engines detect this, the websites that engage in these practices are penalized or deindexed.
