Can You Sell a Website with No Revenues?
The short answer is it is very, very difficult. We sometimes receive requests from sellers looking to sell websites that have no revenues. The buyers that we work with don’t look at such websites so we have to turn them down.
In fact, most buyers don’t look at websites that have no revenues. As a seller, you must put yourself in the shoes of the buyer. A buyer can set up another website that produces no revenues on his own. He doesn’t need to buy a website for this purpose.
Like investors that invest in real estate for rental income or stocks for dividends, website buyers are basically buying the cash-flow of the website. So regardless of how much it cost to set up the website, many buyers won’t see the value in purchasing a website without cash-flow.
Looking to sell a website with no revenues is very difficult but not impossible. Some websites are expensive to set up and so the seller can present the website as a shortcut for a buyer looking to set up a similar website. The buyer receives a turnkey website from which he can instantly look to generate cash-flow.
However, finding this buyer is daunting because the no-revenue website has to compete in the marketplace with revenue-producing websites that the same buyer has available to him. As such, it is inevitably more difficult and takes longer to sell a no-revenue website. But it is possible.
So, in a nutshell, trying to sell a website with no revenues is tough, but not impossible.
